How to Find Mexican Car Insurance

Whether for the weekend or for an extended vacation, Mexico has a lot to offer. From big cities to coastal villages and deserts in between, Mexico is a beautiful place to visit. Unlike many countries, Mexico is an easy place for Americans to drive to and explore. But for anyone who has ever read their car insurance policy, Mexico is place where their coverage does not apply and don’t even think about taking a rental car to Mexico!! So what is the traveler to do? How do you find the right insurance that will cover you on your trip to Mexico?

Before you cross the border, you must have what is known as “Mexican domiciled car insurance.” In other words, the car insurance must originate with a Mexican insurance company. This means that the American insurance you have now won’t cut it, although larger, multi-national companies may have an affiliation with a Mexican Insurance Company that can assist you. Without Mexican insurance, you have no coverage to reimburse you in the event of damage or theft of your vehicle. If you are involved in a car accident, your car may be detained by the authorities and even put in jail for not having insurance.

Only a handful of insurance companies offer tourist auto insurance. When you find the agency you wish to purchase coverage from, it is important to check the A.M. Best rating of the insurer. This is an indication of the financial strength and stability of the company. Ideally the company you do business with should have a rating of “Excellent” or “Good”.

When shopping for Mexican car insurance, make sure your policy includes, at a minimum, both liability and legal assistance. The liability portion of the insurance covers any damage you might cause to other vehicles or property, as well as any bodily injuries you may cause. Legal assistance will help with the process of dealing with Mexican courts if they should become involved. Some counties along the border, for example San Diego County, California will provide both liability and legal assistance coverage to drivers for $12.00 per day.

Should you experience car trouble or a breakdown in Mexico, look for the Green Angels. The Green Angles are a Mexican government sponsored organization that patrols the main highways from 8am to 8pm daily. The Angles are trained mechanics who carry oil, gasoline, spare parts and the ability to call for help. They get their name from the green and white trucks they drive.

With these tips, you should have a great vacation and enjoy the peace of mind knowing that should you have an accident, everything will be covered.
